How long should a baby and toddler sleep?
Your newborn will sleep a lot, up to 17 hours a day. During the first weeks most babies sleep 2 to 4 hours at a time, their sleep patterns are not related to the daylight and nighttime cycles yet. Your baby will be awake for only 3 quarters of an hour, he eats and sleeps. Premature babies may sleep longer and colicky babies shorter. The irregular sleep pattern of your little one will be tiring for you, you will probably be up several times during the night, to feed, change diapers and to comfort your baby. When your baby is about 6 weeks old, you may notice a more regular sleep pattern, shorter sleep periods during the day and longer periods at night. Most babies will wake up to feed during the night. At the age of 4 to 6 months most infants will sleep 14 to 15 hours per day and they are capable to sleep through the night, some babies continue to wake up at night into toddlerhood. When your baby becomes a toddler, he will sleep 12 to 14 hours per day, which includes 2 naps during the day, one short nap in the morning and a longer one after lunch up to 2 hours. It is best not letting your toddler sleep after about 3:30 p.m., it might interfere nighttime sleeping. Around 18 months, most toddlers need one nap of 2 to 3 hours in the afternoon. If your toddler wakes up too early in the morning, it might be the a signal that it is time to abandon the afternoon nap.
